It's a Baker's Dozen!
July 02, 2005
Sorry for the delay. I was really unhappy with comic #012, and I've been thinking
about what is wrong with it. And that led to thoughts about just what it is that I'm
trying to do with Stickopolis, and that led to other distractions. Also, there's a weird
inertia that has to be overcome every two comics. See, Stickopolis is
drawn on 8.5x11 printer paper, and I can fit two comics per page. So after every even numbered
comic I face anew the grim sight of a blank sheet of paper, and somedays that's pretty daunting.
I've been thinking about the gags
that I've been trying to tell, and comparing it to the sorts of things that I find really
funny, and there's a significant gap between the two.
I have to remember that while it feels like I've been doing this forever,
this is a very young strip. I have a lot to learn, about pacing, about story structure, and
about writing the kind of humor that I most enjoy. So there are bound to be some not-so-good strips,
and I hope you'll bear with me through them.
Even today's comic, which I was pretty happy with earlier, has its difficulties.
There's a definite problem between panels 3 and 4, and I only noticed
it maybe an hour ago. And super-heated Iron Dragon? Not so exciting.
Though I admit I am pleased with the expression on the Hydrosaur's face.
I wasn't sure I was going to get it to look surprised, but I think I managed it.
Hydrosaurus is almost done, and then we're off into the great unknown!
